LOS ANGELES-- "Champ" the four year old German Shepherd mix was shot and badly hurt while protecting his family's home, and was scheduled to be euthanized after weeks of being kept as evidence. Alton officer kills pit bull that attacked him

ALTON — The 60-pound pit bull named Scrappy who attacked an Alton police officer Thursday morning still had his jaws clamped down over the policeman's boot minutes after being shot four times by police. "After the dog was deceased, they had to pry his jaws off the boot," Alton police Capt. Scott Waldrup said Friday. The officer, Jonathan Lukowski, went back to work Thursday to finish his shift after getting 10 stitches in his thigh. Lukowski will be assigned to light duty, primarily answering phones, until he gets his stitches removed.
